Teaching Philosophy
My artwork and my teaching stem from the same set of values. They come from the belief in the intrinsic empowerment found in art making, the importance of drawing from past experiences, and an emphasis on asking questions in order to grow.
The most powerful moments for me as an educator are those that happen away from the classroom; when a student takes something that she has learned and applies it to another facet of her life. John Dewey says, “learning is what happens when what has been taught has been forgotten.” A successful learning situation is one in which a student feels personal growth, rather than accumulation of knowledge or experience.
As a teacher, I consider myself a facilitator. It is my obligation to create a safe and inclusive learning environment, one that will encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and risk taking. As I impart technical skills and information, it is also my duty to encourage students as active learners who will seek out those new skills and knowledge. I do this by remaining open and available to the challenges as well as the expertise and interests of my students.
